Rigid Parts - These original pieces were covered in fiberglass and sanded to produce finished components for all parts, rigid and flexible.

These parts were cast in fiberglass. A sprayed urethane core was installed and used to integrate the steel structure that connected the head to the mechanical sections of the robot. An inner layer of fiberglass completed the assembly.

Flexible Parts - The lip / gum sections were cast in 4 pound density, flexible urethane foam. An elastomeric urethane in-mold coating provided the rubber surface that the stretch fabric, finished surface was glued to.

These were complex parts with integrated fiberglass connection pieces; The gums could be connected to the rigid jaw. The connection was seamlessly fitted with a final stretch fabric covering. When everything was almost complete it was decided to add an additional (movable) upper lip. A new model, molds, and cast flexible parts were created.
Integration- An Actuation mechanism was installed by modifying the rigid sections and the new flexible parts were fitted. These movable lip parts allowed the operator of the robot to have additional control of the plant’s Facial expression in addition to opening and closing the mouth.
