For this project a sculpture for the big head was carved by Scenic artists in soft foam. Beyond Design then applied a fiberglass resin with a fine reinforcement. On top of this we applied a sandable polyester gel coat. At this point mold release was applied and we began to laminate a fire rated, transparent epoxy resin with “surf board” cloth to create a transparent composite about 3/32” thick. |

This was de-molded to create a structural, extremely lightweight shell. Each half of the head was 8 feet wide by 18 feet tall and weighed about 50 pounds. Graphics, printed on clear adhesive film, were applied to the finished part so when lit from the inside, the graphics were visible and created the desired effect. |
